King Alfred of Wessex saved Saxon England by defeating the Danish Viking invaders at the Battle of Edington in 878 and making a deal with them to divide the country in two, giving all of eastern England to the Vikings. This area was called the Danelaw. The Saxons kept the west. The Viking leader accepted Christianity and became Alfred's godson. (Source: Atlas of European History, G. Bell and Sons, London, 1910)
