KING ARTHUR
The legend of King Arthur
According to Welsh legends, Arthur was a Celtic leader who led his army against the Romans in Britania early in the first
millennium.
Also, according to Welsh legends, Arthur fought the Angles and Saxons who invaded Britain in the middle of the first millennium.
The first literary reference to Arthur was Welsh in circa AD 800.
Other later literary sources place Arthur in the 500s.
Geoffrey of Monmouth described Arthur in his Historia Regum Britanniae (History of the Kings of Britain) circa 1136 as
a king. He added Arthur's father Uther Pendragon, Merlin the magician, the sword Excalibur, Arthur's wife Guinevere, Tintagel
Castle, the Battle of Camlann, and the island of Avalon.
The French poet, Chrétien de Troyes, in the 1100s, added Arthur's castle, Camelot. He wrote about the knight, Lancelot,
and the Holy Grail (the cup of Jesus at the Last Supper).
Later, others added stories of the Knights of the Round Table to stories of Arthur.
-----------------
BEOWULF
Anglo-Saxon / Old English poetry
The poem is in Old English, or Anglo-Saxon, the
common language of England after its settlement
by Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Frisians in the
400s to some time after the Battle of Hastings
in 1066 and the subsequent Norman Conquest.
The poem recounts the story of Beowulf, a
famous warrior from the tribe of the Gaets
in southwestern Scandanavia (Sweden).
At the request of the King of the Danes,
Beowulf travels to Denmark to slay a
monster, Grendel. He kills also another
monster, Grendel's mother.
Beowulf returns home. He is the King of the
Gaets for the next 50 years.
Beowulf slays a dragon and dies of his wounds.
The events recounted in the tales are in the
last half of the first millenium - and perhaps
earlier.

The Battle of Stamford Bridge
BBC radio
In Our Time
Melvyn Bragg hosts a discussion about the Battle
of Stamford Bridge with John Hines, Elizabeth
Rowe and Stephen Baxter.
In January 1066, the English king, Edward the
Confessor, died.
A powerful nobleman, Harold Godwinson, claimed
that Edward had made him his successor.
Harold Godwinson took the throne.
But the Duke of Normandy, William, in France,
claimed that Edward had promised him the throne.
William gathered a big army of Normans and
Bretons and prepared to invade England.
Meanwhile, the King of Norway, Harald Hardrada,
sailed across the North Sea and invaded the north
of England.
The brother of Harold Godwinson, Tostig, joined
Harold Hardrada.
They defeated local English leaders at the Battle
of Fulford.
Harold Godwinson, the King of England, marched
north from London and confronted the invading
armies of Harold Hardrada and Tostig Godwinson.
The English army, led by King Harold Godwinson,
defeated the invading Vikings at the Battle of
Stamford Bridge. Harold Hardrada and Tostig were
killed.
Harold Godwinson marched his army south to confront
William of Normandy.
Three weeks later, the army of William of Normandy
defeated and killed Harold Godwinson at the Battle
of Hastings.
William of Normandy claimed the crown.
Thus began the Norman Conquest of England.

From the novel Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott in 1819
Norman saw on English oak,
On English neck a Norman yoke;

And England ruled as Normans wish.
Is it true that the English defeat by the
Normans at the Battle of Hastings in 1066
was followed by centuries of cruel oppression
of the Anglo Saxons by Norman rulers?

The Spanish Civil War
1936 to 1939
Spain was a kingdom, with a monarchy, since the time
of the Visigoths (A. D. 418 to 721).
In 1873, the King of Spain abdicated. A republic was proclaimed by liberals in parliament.
In the following year, 1874, the Spanish military
restored the monarchy.
In 1931, the King of Spain was deposed and the Republic, called the Second Republic, was restored.
In 1934, the Left staged a revolt. Fighting followed.
The military stopped the fighting.
In 1936, leftists won national legislative elections
and formed the government.
The military opposed the new government. A civil war
ensued with Republicans and leftists on one side,
defending the Republic and the government, and rightists, called Nationalists, on the other side.
The Republicans were backed by workers, liberals,
democrats, socialists, communists, anarchists,
separatists and many sympathizers abroad. Many went
to Spain and fought as volunteers. They formed the International Brigades.
The Soviet Union backed the Republic.
The Nationalists were backed by monarchists, conservatives, the military and fascists - and many sympathizers abroad.
Hitler and the German Nazis and Mussolini and the Italian fascists supported the Nationalists.
In 1939, the Republicans surrendered and the Spanish miliary, led by General Francisco Franco, ruled the
country.
Franco died in 1975.
Subsequently, democracy and monarchy were restored.
