The King of England, Richard I / Richard 'the
Lionheart' (r. 1189 to 1199), is away on
Crusade (Third Crusade, 1189 to 1192), to
recover Jerusalem and the Holy Land from
Saladin, the ruler of Egypt and Syria and
leader of Muslim armies in the Middle East.
In King Richard's absence, his younger brother,
Prince John, rules England. The Normans rule
England since the Norman Conquest 100 years
earlier. Prince John and the Norman barons
oppress the Saxon inhabitants.
On his way back home from the Crusade, King
Richard is kidnaped and held for ransom by
Leopold, Duke of Austria, and the Holy Roman
Emperor, Henry VI.
Prince John schemes to seize the throne and
extort money from the Saxons to pay the
ransom for King Richard.
A Saxon noble, Sir Robin of Locksley, defends
the Saxon poor against the Prince John and
his Norman barons.
